As a registered charity we collect non-toxic waste materials from industry and redistribute them for free to over 2,500 groups and organisations working with children, young people, and community groups all over Northern Ireland. Today, Play Resource is one of the largest and most well used resource centre of its kind in the UK, benefiting over 300,000 children and young people each year.

Our Mission

To create opportunities to develop the creative potential of children and young people in Northern Ireland, which enhances their quality of life and strengthens their ability to express themselves fully and freely.

History

We have 30 years of experience of recycling waste materials from factories, shops, offices and warehouses across the region through our unique Scrapstore. We are committed to raising environmental awareness by promoting the re-use of non-toxic waste materials in creative activities and educational projects, and belong to a network of ScrapstoresUK wide.

The Art & Play Shop is a highly successful social enterprise. Started in 1983 with just a few basic items, it now provides a huge range of over 1000 art and play materials to the community sector.

The Value of Arts & Creativity

Play and creative expression are essential for a child’s learning and development. Fun and enjoyment gained through engaging in arts activities produces a more positive attitude to learning. It enables young people to develop self esteem, confidence and a sense of pride.

We know that children’s learning and development, and young people’s confidence and self-esteem are greatly enhanced by experiencing quality creative play and participating in the arts. That’s why all our arts outreach programmes are designed to increase their participation in the arts and encourage creative play.

Partnership with Industry

“Play Resource enables us to find a home for some of our waste that truly benefits others and helps us be a good neighbour. What a wonderful solution!”

Nigel McGarry, Environment Specialist – IKEA Belfast

“With businesses coming under increasing pressure to minimise their waste and impact on the environment, or face heavy fines, we need to find the best way to dispose of it. We are delighted to be supporting such a creative solution to this problem – Firms donating to Play Resource can be confident that their waste will benefit the local community instead of going to landfill.”

Judith Marrs – Rfd Beaufort Ltd, Dunmurry

“GPS is dedicated to protecting the environment and recently became the first printing firm in Ireland to become a Carbon Neutral Company. We believe that working with Play Resource is an excellent example of how easily businesses can get more involved with helping local communities in ways which also aid the environment.”
