Springtime Spoon Animal Puppets

You will need:

  • Wooden spoons
  • Tissue Paper
  • Funky foam
  • Pipecleaners
  • Google eyes
  • PVA glue
  • Tape
  • Netting: scrap materials

Instructions:

  1. To make the sheep, crumple up small balls of white tissue paper and stick to the spoon with PVA glue. Curl a black pipecleaner into a dense oval shape and glue on top of the tissue. Stick on two google eyes. Make the ears by bending a black pipecleaner into shape and tape to the back of the spoon.
  2. To make the bee, cut an oval shape from yellow funky foam. Make it slightly larger than the head of the spoon. Give the bee stripes by sticking black pipecleaners across the yellow foam. Cut wing shapes from scrap net and stick to the back of the spoon. Make antennae from black pipecleaners and add google eyes.
  3. To make the bird, glue blue tissue paper to the spoon with PVA. Cut the beak shape from yellow foam and stick on, along with two google eyes. Bend two pipecleaners into wing shapes and tape to the back of the spoon.

Scrap Bottle Jet Pack

You will need:

  • Plastic Bottles
  • Felt
  • PVA glue
  • Funky Foam
  • Seat Belt Material – scrap material
  • Silver Card

Instructions:

  1. Start by gluing the 2 bottles together.
  2. Strengthen by gluing a strip of silver card around them.
  3. Cut flames from felt, glue together and then glue these inside the bottle openings.
  4. Using 2 lengths of seat belt scrap material, glue these to the back of the jet pack for straps.
  5. Decorate with a ‘Woosh!’ by cutting the letters from funky foam.…To infinity and beyonnnnnnnd!!!

Early Years Fish

You will need:

  • Zip Lock Bags
  • Tissue
  • Cellotape
  • Self Adhesive Google Eyes
  • Pipecleaners

Instructions:

  1. Fold both bottom corners of bag over and tape down to make the bottom end of the bag into a pointed shape.
  2. Rip some tissue paper and use it to loosely fill the bag up to the top.
  3. Close the zip.  Wrap a pipecleaner around the bag to create a tail.
  4. Add some google eyes.

Pop Up Furniture Shop - doors open!

Why not pop into our new Pop-Up Furniture Shop next time you visit Play Resource?!…The doors opened today on our new Pop-Up Furniture Shop – in Unit 41, North City Business Centre.  It’s the unit next door to Play Resource across the car park.  For the forseeable future we are lucky to the have loan of the extra space, thanks to North City Business Centre. Filled with the overspill of furniture from the Scrapstore,  there is all sorts in there including office tables, chairs, cabinets, sofas, and tables! Don’t miss it….pop in!

Have a browse and if you see something you like then any member of Play Resource can speak to Paul, our Resources Supervisor, and become the proud owner of a piece of furniture…what a chance to give it a good new home!

Fun Felt Ball Garland

You will need:

  • Carded wool
  • String
  • Water
  • Washing up liquid

Instructions:

  1. Take a wad of carded wool fibres and roll into a ball.
  2. Dip the ball into a dish of warm water mixed with a small amount of washing up liquid.
  3. Roll the ball of wool in your hands until the ball hardens. Keep dipping it in the water and changing rolling patterns to ensure the fibres felt together. Rinse the balls out and leave to dry.
  4. Repeat with different colours of carded wool.
  5. Poke a hole through the balls and thread onto a piece of string.

Giant Water Lily

You will need:

  • Tissue Paper
  • Green Crepe Paper
  • Scrap Polystyrene
  • Pipecleaners

Instructions:

  1. For the flower – lay 9 sheets of tissue paper on top of each other.  Make concertina folds every 2 inches along the short edge of the tissue paper.  Wrap 3 pipecleaners around centre + twist to secure.
  2. Push some polystyrene onto pipecleaners to create stamens.
  3. Cut each end of the tissue paper into a triangle.  Gently unfold the first layer of tissue paper + continue with all the outer layers.
  4. You may want to staple together the edges of the outer layers.
  5. To make the lily pad – take a full pack of green crepe paper + concertina fold along the whole length.  Staple at one end + cut into a point at the other end.

Easy Tiger Lily

You will need:

  • Animal Tissue Paper
  • Green Tissue Paper
  • Green Tape
  • Cellotape
  • Scrap Tubing
  • Pipecleaners

Instructions:

  1. For the petals – cut 3 sheets of animal tissue paper each in half to create 6 long thin strips.  Use cellotape to turn these into 6 thin tubes.  Fold each tube in half and join ends together with tape.
  2. Join all of the petals together with tape.  Scrunch a sheet of green tissue into a leaf shape and tape to the stem of the petals.
  3. Cover a length of scrap tubing using green tape and attach this to the petals and leaves using green tape.
  4. Push some lengths of pipecleaners into the centre of petals.

Spring Hyacinth

You will need:

  • Cardboard Tube
  • Tissue Paper
  • PVA
  • Funky Foam

Instructions:

  1. Cover the cardboard tube with green tissue paper.
  2. Scrunch up small pieces of pink and purple tissue paper. Glue with PVA onto the top third of the cardboard tube.
  3. Stick the small pieces of pink and purple tissue close together until the whole area is covered.
  4. Stick more pieces of tissue on top to cover the hole in the cardboard tube.
  5. Cut 7 long strips of green funky foam. Stick the bottom half of the strip to the base of the cardboard tube.

Spring Bouquet

You will need:

  • A2 Green Sugar Paper
  • Yellow Card
  • Orange, Green, Pink Tissue
  • Ribbon
  • Scrap Card
  • PVA glue
  • Masking Tape
  • Cellotape
  • Poster Paints
  • Glitter Glue

Instructions:

  1. Begin by making flower stalks. Cut a section of A2 green sugar paper, about 8 inches by 12 inches. Once cut, roll into a thin tube starting from one of the corners towards the opposite far corner of the paper. Fix tube in place using cellotape and repeat this process to make 5 more stalks.
  2. Next, cut out some circular flower shapes from yellow card, then cut a small line in the shapes stopping at about the centre of the flower. After this turn one of the edges underneath the other to make a cone and cellotape together.
  3. Tear off strips of orange tissue paper and use PVA to glue into the centre of the flower head. Once dry, add some decoration with glitter glue.
  4. After you have decorated all your flower heads, glue them to your flower stalks using PVA. Add a final touch by tearing off strips of green tissue, wrapping around the back of the flower head and fix in place with cellotape.
  5. Next, take a piece of scrap card, about 10 x 10 inches and roll into a wide cone and fix in place using masking tape.
  6. Colour in your cone using poster paints and, when dry, decorate using glitter glue.
  7. Finally, tear off a large square of pink tissue paper and place into the cone along with your flowers. Cut a section of ribbon and tie this into a bow around the middle of the cone.

Lovely Little Ladybird

You will need:

  • Clay
  • Paint
  • Modelling tools

Instructions:

  1. Squish a lump of clay into a ladybird shape.
  2. Poke holes in the clay with modelling tools to make the ladybird’s spots.
  3. Score a line down the middle of the ladybird’s wings.
  4. Leave the clay to dry then paint your ladybird.

Simple Spring Painting

You will need:

  • A5 Canvas Frame
  • Poster paint

Instructions:

  1. Mix black poster paint with a small amount of water to make it slightly runny.
  2. Drop some black paint onto the canvas and tilt it so that the paint runs. Control the run of the paint by tilting the canvas in different directions. Repeat this step in to create an impression of tree branches.
  3. Dip your finger into green paint and print onto the canvas around the black areas.
