Specialist Workshop Programme Launches

Welcome to a year of specialist arts and crafts at Play Resource!

We are excited to offer a new programme of training workshops to give people the chance to master a new skill, have fun, explore their creativity, and gets hands on experience with a qualified artist.

Venue & Times

Each workshop is designed to run over 3 afternoons from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, totaling 9 hours of arts and craft training dedicated to each topic, all taking place at Play Resource.


The programme offers great value! The cost of a workshop package for 3 sessions including materials is only £45 for members and £50 for non-members.

Cool Camera

You will need:

  • Small cardboard box
  • Small yoghurt pot
  • Black Paint
  • Plastic bottle tops
  • Silver card
  • Black Crepe
  • Silver pen


  1. Paint the box and the yoghurt pot black.
  2. When the box is dry cut a circle in the centre the size of the base of the yoghurt box. Gently wedge the pot into the hole.
  3. Stick on a couple of bottle tops on the top and the front of the camera to make buttons. Make the flash by sticking a small bit of silver card onto a small cube of cardboard.
  4. For the strap take a length of crepe and stick at either end of the box.
  5. Using the silver pen write on the name and model of your camera. Happy Snapping!

Pop Up Fathers Day Card

You will need:

  • Card
  • Foam
  • Glue
  • Scissors


  1. Take a sheet of A4 card and fold in half. Crease the edge.
  2. With scissors snip three tabs in the creased edge.
  3. Pop the tabs inwards so the crease is pointing inside the card.
  4. Cut shapes from foam and stick to the tabs, or print out a photograph and stick this on instead.
  5. Decorate the outside of the card with foam letters. You can use ready made foam letters or draw your message on foam sheets and cut them out.

People Plates

You will need:

  • Paper Plates
  • Feathers
  • Felt
  • Google Eyes
  • Scrap of Fabric
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Funky Foam
  • Paint


The beauty of these ‘people plates’ is that you can use your imagination and create any character you want. You could even make a Mummy or Daddy face!

  1. To make a pirate paint the plate and leave to dry. Cut out a semi circle of fabric to make the hat then tie a small strip of fabric and stick onto the side. Make the eye patch and moustache using funky foam. With a black marker draw on some stubble. Make the gold earring using a pipe cleaner.
  2. To make a Native American girl cut out a long bob shape from black felt. Cut three strips on both sides of the bob and plait. Secure with pipe cleaner. Stick feathers to a strip of cardboard for head band and add beads to decorate. Make the lips using funky foam. Stick on google eyes.

Model Magic Footie Keyring

You will need:

  • Model Magic
  • Black Sharpie
  • Key Ring Chain


  1. Make a ball from the Model Magic (this modelling material is very soft and great for younger crafters).
  2. Draw on the ball with the black Sharpie to make the pattern.
  3. Carefully press the keyring chain into the model magic ball This will dry around the keyring chain.

Community Arts & Crafts Course – Students Art Exhibition

Community Arts & Crafts Course final exhibition may13

The latest Community Arts & Crafts Training Course is over for another term, but come and take a look at the vibrant exhibition of student’s artwork. It includes a range of prints, felt projects and 3D sculpture. Open from June to September 2013 at Play Resource, upstairs in the Ideas Gallery.

Play Resource is the centre for arts, play and education based in Belfast with membership open to groups across Northern Ireland. We are a charity providing a range of resources and materials, advice, ideas and training for people working with children, young people and community groups. It is the largest creative resource centre of its kind in the UK.

We are a registered charity that collects non-toxic waste materials from industry and redistributes them for free to over 2,500 groups and organisations working with children and young people all over Northern Ireland. These materials are used to support arts, play and education projects in youth clubs, schools, playgroups, after schools clubs, family centres, special needs groups and many other types of children’s groups and organisations.

The successful candidate will work in the busy Art & Play Shop and assist with member enquiries.

Underwater World Scrap Display

Next time you visit the Scrapstore, be amazed at the scrap sea creatures in the ‘Underwater World’ that have just appeared in the Scrap Ideas Gallery. Come face to face with fish, jelly fish, coral, sea stacks! Also featuring the ‘Sea Hag’ on loan from artist Jim Russell.

Visit the latest scrap inspired installation by Amy Willans, our Shop Team member, responsible for creating exciting displays featuring scrap materials. It is a great place to collect Ideas & Inspiration while you collect scrap! Also the perfect environment for exploring under the sea curriculum links.

Woven Lollipops

You will need:

  • Plastic canvas circle (Weaving Circle)
  • Pipecleaners
  • Yarn
  • Yarn needles
  • Wooden sticks


  1. Starting in the centre of the plastic canvas circle weave a pipecleaner in and out of the holes. Follow the circle pattern around the canvas circle.
  2. When you have woven your pipecleaner, follow with a different colour of pipecleaner or a piece of yarn. When weaving with yarn you may need to use a yarn needle.
  3. Continue to weave the whole circle with various colours and thicknesses of yarn and pipecleaners. This will give your lollipop a nice textured, bright appearance.
  4. Finally, stick a wooden stick to the back of the woven circle.
